Sky tweeting football video clips

Sky has recently announced that it will be tweeting video clips of action from the UEFA Champions League. This a new way of engaging with subscribers to their sports channels. For those following the action on TV, the clips should be a bonus, allowing them to relive the highlights of the game whilst for others it might be an invitation to tune-in on the TV or mobile device.

It follows a trial by Sky of the Grabyo's real-time clip-sharing platform, on Transfer Deadline Day in September, when 6000 clips were shared across social networks, reaching around seven million people.

Higher quality streaming on Netflix

Netflix recently announced that it is making Super HD streaming available to all subscribers. This should mean higher quality pictures, since less compression is being applied to the 1080p video. However, subscribers will need access speeds in excess of 14 Mbps in order to benefit from this higher tier streaming access. More details can be found in this article by Colin Mann on Advanced-Television.com. Much as the best quality radio streaming can now be found online (for example, BBC Radio 3’s HD Radio service), perhaps UK broadcasters will follow Netflix’s example.
